Canterbury Blades Fencing Club has received funding to help it set up a disabled section within the group.

The club was awarded £800 by Persimmon Homes through its Community Champions scheme.

Jack Stone, from Canterbury Blades, said: “We are raising money to set up a disabled section in our group. This will cover people with learning difficulties and physical disabilities. This will get them active after Covid and improve their health.

“We are very grateful to Persimmon for this funding, thank you very much.”

Canterbury Blades is part of Kent Fencing Clubs, and each week classes are run by clubs in Canterbury, Dover, Deal and Ramsgate.

Jack added: “Often, the biggest obstacle to taking up fencing is finding somewhere to have a go, but most clubs run short beginners’ courses. If you are a beginner wishing to try the sport or an experienced fencer coming back to it email us and we will try to help you.

“There are a number of clubs in Kent, both formal and informal. Most welcome beginners and will lend you equipment until you get started. Each charge £3 to take part and don’t ask for a subscription or require you to sign up for anything. All of the clubs offer regular beginners’ courses where you can learn the sport with a qualified coach.
“They will lend you the equipment needed for 10 weeks, normally after this fencers wish to buy their own equipment as that they have jackets that fit perfectly and have swords which are perfect for their needs.”
