Markinch Memorial Hall donation has renovation project on track

A project to renovate 252 Memorial Hall in Markinch has been given a major boost after a £2,000 donation from housebuilder Persimmon.

252 Memorial Hall is a community hall which is used for uniformed groups, regular classes and is also available for hire. It was built in 1920 as a memorial to 24 local men killed during WWI, who worked at the local paper mill. In 1993 the hall was gifted to the local uniformed associations and is now looked after by a management committee.

The committee has embarked on a refurbishment programme to ensure the hall stays fit for purpose and is a welcoming space for local people to enjoy. Works include roof repairs, plastering, painting, and refurbishing main hall floor – as well as replacing boilers to improve the hall’s energy efficiency and reduce costs.

This donation will be used to help replace the outdated kitchen in the hall and will support significant improvements to the important community facility. The donation has been delivered through Persimmon’s Community Champions programme, which sees up to £64,000 donated to good causes across the UK every month.

Wendy Anderson, from the 252 Memorial Hall Management Committee, said:

“The management committee and hall users are really grateful for this boost to our fundraising efforts and this money will make such a difference to our ongoing refurbishment plans.”

James MacKay, Persimmon North Scotland Managing Director, said:

“I’m delighted we’re able to support the project to renovate 252 Memorial Hall. The hall has a great history and provides an important focal point for the local community.

“Residents in Markinch and beyond will benefit from these improvements and the management committee deserve real credit for their fundraising efforts. I hope our donation will go a long way to helping them complete this important project.”

Glenrothes North, Leslie and Markinch Councillor, Peter Gulline, said:

“It’s great to see Persimmon taking an interest in a local community project such as the Markinch 252 Hall upgrades – the donation is most welcome.”
