A Shropshire cricket club that provides organised sport in a safe and friendly environment has been handed a major boost thanks to Persimmon Homes.
Worfield Cricket Club has received a £1,000 grant from West Midlands as part of its Community Champions scheme.
Persimmon makes £64,000 a month available to fund local community initiatives across the UK.
Worfield CC is an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) accredited club and has a thriving junior section, having recently been awarded the Shropshire All Stars & Dynamos Club of the Year in 2021.
David Cook, from the club, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be receiving this funding from Persimmon Homes, it’s a real boost as we look ahead to the new season.
“We anticipate running a minimum of five junior teams at various age groups this year and we believe qualified coaches must be dressed appropriately to present the right image to youngsters and their parents.
“We’ll use this donation to support the purchase of appropriate clothing and it will be a very proud moment when we have such a big name like Persimmon on our polo shirts and hoodies.
“In the past we’ve been sponsored by a local school and already this financial year our two biggest fundraisers have been cancelled, so it’s fair to say that we’ve been hit hard by the pandemic.
“To try and combat this, we’re holding an evening with two ex-professional footballers in February and planning a junior entertainment evening in March designed to raise funds.
“This £1,000 grant from Persimmon Homes couldn’t have come at a better time so we’d just like to say another massive thank you for selecting us.”
David Greengrass, Sales Director Designate for Persimmon Homes West Midlands, said: “It’s great to be able to support a community club like Worfield, especially after such a difficult couple of years.
“The junior programme has been running in the village for around 20 years and over 100 children are coached on a Friday night between April and September, so it plays a massive part in keeping youngsters healthy and active.
“Davenport Park is also one Shropshire's most picturesque settings and the new state of the art Pavilion means that with a little help from local organisations, the club has all the facilities in place to have a long, successful future.”
