Green light for new homes in Durham

Persimmon Homes has received a formal approval notice to progress 48 new homes just north of Durham city centre.

Durham County Council has given the go ahead for Persimmon to move ahead with phase 2 of our Aykley Woods development on the site of the former Durham Police headquarters.

This next phase, which received approval from the Council’s planning committee last year, will provide a mix of new homes ranging in size from two-bedroom bungalows through to four-bedroom detached houses.

A contemporary design will see the new homes incorporating contrasting brick panelling, grey window frames and Juliet and full balconies on several properties.

Seven homes will be transferred to a housing association while an additional five properties will be sold at a discount of 35% on the open market. Persimmon previously made a £1.6 million contribution to Durham County Council for the provision of affordable housing as part of approval for phase 1.

Funding to the Council for this next phase include nearly £100,000 on education provision, £75,000 for off-site play facilities and over £20,000 on both healthcare and infrastructure.

Welcoming the approval, Managing Director for Persimmon Durham Ed Alder said: “This is great news for local home buyers.

“We’d like to thank Durham County Council for their support in delivering new homes and helping progress the next phase of this fantastic development.

“This scheme will deliver a range of quality new homes designed for local families, first-time buyers and downsizers who otherwise might struggle to get on the housing ladder in Durham.

“Located next to both the recreation ground and Aykley Wood Nature Reserve and just a mile from Durham railway station, this phase is certain to prove just as popular with buyers as phase one.”
