Severn Valley receives unanimous approval for 162-home development in Castle Cary
24 April 2025

Persimmon Homes Severn Valley has secured unanimous approval from Somerset Council’s South Area Planning Committee for its proposed residential development in Castle Cary, following a decision made on 22nd April.
The approved scheme will deliver 162 high-quality homes, including 35 per cent affordable housing to help meet local demand, with a mix of affordable rent and shared ownership properties being delivered in partnership with a local housing association.
Homes will be constructed to high energy-efficiency standards using timber-frame construction, with a number equipped with solar panels and electric vehicle charging points. The layout includes a local equipped area for play, generous public open space, and dedicated pedestrian and cycle routes to promote active travel across the site.
A focus on biodiversity will see the inclusion of new hedgerows, woodland planting, and sustainable drainage systems, while bird and bat boxes will be installed to support local wildlife. The development has been designed to integrate sensitively with the surrounding area and enhance the natural landscape.
As part of a Section 106 agreement, Persimmon will also safeguard land for a future primary school, and make financial contributions towards education, as well as local recreation and leisure facilities. Two hectares of land are also being set aside for future employment use, supporting long-term job creation in the area.
Claire Burton, Managing Director at Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, said:
“We’re delighted with the committee’s unanimous decision, which reflects the collaborative effort and careful planning behind this scheme with Somerset Council.
“This development will not only provide much-needed new homes for local people but will also deliver wider benefits including new infrastructure to environmental enhancements and support for the local economy.
“We’re grateful to Somerset Council and members for their support and look forward to delivering a high-quality, sustainable development for the local community in Castle Cary.”
