Persimmon offers £5,000 boost to centre at the heart of former mining community in Kent

A neighbourhood centre that acts as a lifeline for the most vulnerable in the village of Hersden, near Canterbury, is celebrating after being awarded a grant from Persimmon Homes.

The five-star housebuilder donated £5,000 from their Community Champions fund to Hersden Neighbourhood Centre Association.

Persimmon Homes South East awards funding throughout the year to charities, schools and organisations as they work to create a lasting legacy in the communities within which they are building.

The team at the neighbourhood centre applied for funding last year in the hope of being able to upgrade their facilities and further the work they do in the community.

The centre hosts seated exercise classes to keep older people mobile, baby groups for young families and support for those in need, as well as working with Local Authorities, Kent Community Health NHS FT, and charities including food banks, to offer social support to those in need.

A marquee used for outdoor events was damaged in high winds over the winter and the money will help pay for a replacement, alongside money fundraised by the hard-working team.

Jack Brabham, Trustee at Hersden Neighbourhood Centre Association, said: “This generous contribution from Persimmon will go a long way in supporting the work we do here in Hersden.

“This former mining village has a close-knit community and we work together to look after those in need. The centre is a hub for the village, and we do all we can to make it accessible to all so having these funds will help us improve facilities for everyone while keeping costs down.”

Kerri Bland, Planning Director for Persimmon Homes South East, said: “We are delighted to support this vital community centre and help them to provide such an active and varied programme of events to the people of Hersden.

“We will be starting work on our development in Hersden later this year and want to demonstrate our commitment to leaving a positive and lasting legacy here.”

Alan Marsh, who represents Herne Village & Sturry at Kent County Council, joined the presentation at the centre and said: “We would like to thank Persimmon Homes for supporting our community. We are grateful for these funds and they will be used to support many within the village.”

Persimmon Homes South East’s hybrid application for a site north of Hersden was approved last year giving full permission for 261 homes, and outline permission for a further 539.

The development will unlock finances for the long-planned Sturry relief road by contributing £6.3m to the project.
